CNN —The allision between the container ship MV Dali and the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday has prompted numerous questions — not only about how this tragedy occurred, but also about our global shipping processes. This marked the start of a campaign by the Houthis, in support of Hamas in their attack on Israel, against global shipping transiting the Red Sea, Bab-el-Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden. Now, two years later, Baltimore is closed with remains of the Key Bridge athwart the main shipping channel. No one agency has oversight of or coordinates global shipping or ports in the US. Many Republicans plan to skip the House GOP retreat as they grumble about both the location and the idea of spending time with one another, with tensions still running high inside the party in the wake of their unprecedented speakership drama. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s speaker bid crashed and burned on Tuesday just hours after his party nominated him for the gavel amid deep divisions within the conference that began to appear insurmountable three weeks into the standoff. And for other lawmakers, they simply didn’t believe Emmer could get the backing needed to secure the gavel. Emmer narrowly won the party’s nomination on the fifth round of votes behind closed doors on Tuesday in a contest that began with seven candidates, with the lowest vote-getter being dropped each round. Some of those candidates are expected to relaunch their bids for speaker in light of Emmer’s bowing out.
